What are the symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative Colitis symptoms can vary, depending on the severity of inflammation and where it occurs. Most people with ulcerative colitis have mild to moderate symptoms. The main symptom of Ulcerative Colitis is bloody diarrhea. Some other symptoms one may experience are:

  • Diarrhea, often with blood or pus
  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Rectal pain
  • Rectal bleeding — passing small amount of blood with stool
  • Urgency to defecate
  • Inability to defecate despite urgency
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • In children, failure to grow
  • Joint pain or soreness
  • Canker sores
  • Eye pain when looking at a bright light
  • Too few red blood cells, called anemia
  • Skin sores
