Living with Alopecia Areata
How do you diagnose Alopecia Areata?
The diagnosis of Alopecia Areata is fairly straightforward to perform by a dermatologist. Often, a dermatologist can make a conclusion from looking at the extent of hair loss and then by examining a few hair samples under a microscope.
- Visual evaluation - examine the extent, speed, and locations of hair loss
- Examine hair follicles - review under a microscope
- Scalp/skin biopsy - remove a small piece of scalp/skin for analysis
Additionally, blood tests might be performed if additional autoimmune diseases are suspected.
